Since I have been feeling better I decided to head out Saturday and watch UFC 82. I was really only interested in the Silva Vs. Henderson fight. For those of you that don't know the fight was a unification fight for the UFC and Pride middleweight belts. Silva has pretty much walked through the middleweight division of the UFC and Henderson has ruled the Pride middleweight division for a while as well. I am glad that the two major MMA associations are finally doing these unification bouts. UFC is pretty much the undisputed MMA king but there are some great fighters in Pride as well.
I know there are a lot of people that think MMA fighting is to graphic and extreme. To those people I say go home and watch WWE soap opera "wrestling." I have always enjoyed watching the skill and strategy that goes into a good boxing match as well as a good wrestling match. Combining these two types of fighting is great. There are rules, it isn't no holds barred, and they have come a long way in how the refs and doctors manage the fights and protect the fighters. I have to say MMA has probably become my favorite PPV event sport to watch. Boxing doesn't have a big draw anymore and there really hasn't been a good fun to watch heavyweight in quite a while.
I went over the to the Buffalo Wild Wings around the corner from my house to watch the fight. They were the closest that was running the PPV event, and I had a few friends that I knew would be there. I got there around 9:15 had a few "lite" beers and just chilled watching the prelim fights. After a bit a few friends showed up and we ordered some wings, and of course some more beers. I am not a big beer drinker as I pretty much prefer mixed drinks. I have been drinking more beer as of late since a few friends started their own brewery here in Chicago. It has started me on a bit of a beer tasting kick. I keep trying new beers just to see if I can really taste the difference and the nuances in each beer. I can sometimes but after a couple not so much.
Anyway, so we are sitting there watching the fight and about every 15 minutes or so the pop up this little graph showing the tracking of text votes for either Silva or Henderson. We got on this discussion about how almost every game show, sporting event, reality show, and even just normal TV, are starting this whole text messaging thing. Send your text vote for this, text your pick for a chance to win, and text this word for exclusive "show" content. I have to admit I don't really get the whole text craze thing. Don't get me wrong I have entered a few contests via text, and communicate quite often with text messaging I just don't get the craze. To me for the most part it is much quicker and easier to just make the phone call and in 1 minute I'm done. Instead I see people spend 30 minutes texting and they might type a whole 5 sentences. Not very productive if you ask me. Although I know there are times when I don't feel like talking and texting is just easier.
Anyway there is was this other survey where you text the word beer to 247365. Then there are 10 text-and-reply questions in the mobile survey. Of course each one has "standard text messaging rates." Everyone who answers all 10 questions will be entered for a chance to win a $300 Amazon gift card. The survey is being presented to a small number of participants, so the odds of winning are about 1500 to 1. Considering the odds of bowling a 300 game is 11,500 to 1 and the odds of getting a hole in one is 5000 to 1, that's pretty good. Not bad odds and if you are into texting and have unlimited messages or don't mind the cost I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to enter.
